There are two primary section types available for mezzanine applications: the C Section range and the Sigma range. Both options align with the sizes and thicknesses commonly used for purlin and rail applications, making them ideal for mezzanine floor designs. Within these options, two installation methods are available: inset or oversail.

Installation

Inset Installation

In this method, the top flange of the beam is installed co-linear with the top flange of the main structural rafter. Cleats are then bolted or welded to the beam’s web.

This approach minimizes the length of the mezzanine sections and reduces the void space between the mezzanine floor and the bottom flange of the main supporting beams.

However, it’s important to account for the flange width of the main supporting beams during the design phase to ensure proper beam length, clearance, and hole positioning relative to the flanges.

Installation

Oversail Installation

The oversail method uses the same cleats found in purlin or rail applications, with sections installed in facing pairs, similar to the inset method.

While this method increases the size of the mezzanine sections, it can simplify the specification process since it eliminates the need to account for the variable flange width of the main beams.
